Colorado man in hospital after I-70 crash in Sherman Co…and other headlines: July 11, 2017

A driver from Colorado is in the hospital after rolling his car on I-70 in Sherman County. He ran off the roadway into the north ditch, flipping the vehicle several times. That man was taken to the hospital in Goodland.
A Kansas man who admitted to stealing more than $275,000 in merchandise from a store where he worked gets one year and one day in prison. He also was ordered to pay full restitution to Garry Gribble’s Running Sports. That man admitted to stealing the gear and selling it on Craigslist.
Some but not all of the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act is suspended. The Legislature passed the order during the session, and it just kicked in – putting off the database on scrap metal sales and background checks on registered dealers until January 2019. The part calling for scrap sellers to produce ID, buyers to keep and take a photo of the scrap, and other records requirements is still in effect.
Westar Energy and Great Plains Energy, the parent company of Kansas City Power & Light, are proposing a new plan to merge, after Kansas regulators nixed an earlier deal. The two companies now hope to form a utility with a combined equity value of $14 billion. The Kansas Corporation Commission blocked a proposed $12.2 billion sale of Topeka-based Westar to Great Plains Energy back in April.
Investigators believe a man who was critically hurt after falling 25 feet was likely trying to jump from one bridge to another. A police spokesman in Topeka believes that man thought he could make the jump or that there’d be something below to catch him.
Federal immigration officials are being sued by the families of two people who authorities claim were killed by a Mexican national in the U.S. illegally. The lawsuit argues Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials negligently allowed a man to stay in the country illegally before he allegedly killed four people in Kansas and one in Missouri last year.
